No you do not need a video background or experience for any of our in-person courses. However, the Intro to Video for Photographers course requires a basic understanding of photography and a photo skillset — including operating a DSLR camera, understanding manual mode, proper exposure and knowledge of typical photo terms such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc. The class will move at a pace that is consistent with this level of knowledge. There is no “one way to learn”, so it is not necessarily a matter of in-person versus online learning. However, there are factors that can lead to a more efficient and effective learning experience with in-person education. Number one is that it allows for hands-on training to walk you through the process as you’re learning. Being able to ask questions and easily troubleshoot issues as you’re learning can make a world of difference. You’re not wasting time trying to google “how to” videos.
Also when learning in a group setting, you’ll often find that other people ask questions that can be incredibly valuable to your learning experience. They may anticipate challenges or questions that maybe you hadn’t considered, but find incredibly useful and vice versa. You may also find that being surrounded by people who are in a similar stage of learning can be very motivating. It creates a community of people who want to help each other learn and grow.
There are of course advantages to online learning, which is why we offer online courses as well. It can be a matter of wanting to learn at your own pace, or being able to work in real-time on your computer during a lesson (such as our Intro to Premiere Pro course).

In my early years of learning video, I looked for video courses and classes, and kept coming up empty handed. Aside from the 8-12 week programs at the local Universities, I couldn’t find a single in-person workshop to teach me everything I needed to know to get started. In the end, I did it the hard way, I spent countless hours researching, watching various online courses, booking mentoring sessions, working as an assistant for commercial filmmakers to learn the ins and outs, and generally just tried to soak up as much information and experience as I could on the fly. I desperately just wanted to find one place where I could learn it all in one shot. Not necessarily to become an expert in one day, but to give me the proper foundation needed to learn professional videography.
So by offering these Intro to Video workshops, I’m combining thousands of hours and thousands of dollars of value from my various experiences and placed them into a one-day intensive training class. It will give you the foundation you need to get started right away. No floundering. No frustrated moments of you-tubing or trying to troubleshoot on a job.

As a studio manager for world renowned wedding photographer and Nikon Ambassador, Cliff Mautner, I helped manage and run his workshops for several years. I taught the studio management portion of his workshop, in addition to fielding questions and managing logistics. I have a unique perspective and knowledge of how to facilitate workshops effectively and efficiently. The feedback I continually received was that I delivered the information in a clear and concise manner. The students appreciated my approach and calm demeanor. I take the time to answer questions thoughtfully and want each and every student to walk away feeling confident in their newly acquired skillset.
I have been in the wedding industry for 15 years, running a successful photo and video studio Femina Weddings + Events alongside a business partner Nicole. I am also the co-owner and Director of Photography for our Branding + Commercial company Catapult + Co. As lead videographer and editor for both companies, my experience expands across multiple industries. To read more, visit the About Us page.

This will not be a typical learning environment or setting. In-person classes will be limited to 8-10 people to allow for a more intimate and personal approach. The studio space also lends itself to a cozier vibe for learning (think: couch and comfy seating). While the courses will be well-structured, there will be ample opportunity for questions and hands-on learning. Questions are always answered in a manner that will make students feel comfortable and unintimidated by the process. Remember, we were all beginners at something, so our goal is to nurture the student-teacher relationship and provide a comfortable environment for learning.

For the Intro to Video for Photographers course, you must bring your own DSRL and have a good understanding and knowledge of how to operate it. I am well-versed in Canon and Nikon gear, however those brands are certainly not a requirement. If you know how to operate your camera and move through all of the modules and menus, I can help explain what settings work best for video (regardless of the camera). We will provide other equipment that you can test out such as a monopod, tripod, gimbal, lighting and audio gear.
For Intro to Video for beginners, you do not need to bring any equipment. We will do more classroom based learning with a PDF workbook as well as using our in-studio equipment for demonstrations and hands-on learning. You will be provided with a list of equipment if you are interested in purchasing the same gear afterwards, but it is not a requirement to come to the class with any equipment.
*A laptop is not required for either in-person course but you are welcome to bring one.

For the Intro to Adobe Premier Pro course, it is recommended that you have access to your own copy of Adobe Premiere Pro. You can of course follow along in the class without editing at the same time, but in order to gain the most perspective and understanding, it would be our recommendation to have the program on hand and edit along with us.

In an effort to be completely transparent, our Intro to Video courses are meant for beginners wanting to learn video. While the Intro to Video for Photographers course does deal with more advanced skills and jumping right into shooting without much explanation of basic techniques (such as exposure, composition, etc), we will be talking through very basic video settings and how to get started. So if you already have some video experience, these courses may not be the right fit for you (this is a personal decision of course). However, if it’s been a while and you’re a bit rusty and want to jump back in, this might be a good refresher. You may also be interested in our Adobe Premiere Pro virtual course.
Please reach out before booking. Again, it is about transparency because you should feel confident in your investment.
We will be offering more advanced courses in the future, so stay tuned and join our mailing list for updates!
